Indoor Outdoor Cine EI Cards V1

FX6 Indoor / Outdoor Cine EI Cards V1

Extraction from FX6 Cine EI Muted-Color Shooting System - Working Baseline

Control Note: Derived extraction document. Source project: FX6 Final Audio Settings + Cine EI Muted-Color Shooting System. Source document chain: Canonized Master TOC and Handbook V1.0 plus current Working Baseline used as extraction source. Canon source untouched. Operational audio setup is deferred to the external FX6 Audio Field Setup Guide. Pages 381-384 of the working source are ignored for extraction work.
Control Item Status / Use
Purpose Field cards for choosing indoor and outdoor Cine EI setup without changing the master document.
Use rule Use these cards at camera setup time. Return to the full Handbook for deeper explanation.
Primary refs Camera controls Chapters 10-18, pp. 68-141; Appendix D/E; Summary Guide Sections 4-7.
Audio policy Verify audio through the external FX6 Audio Field Setup Guide. This card only reminds you to stop and check audio.
Master Field Rule: Expose cleanly. Light selectively. Monitor accurately. Record clean S-Log3. Grade carefully. Do not underexpose S-Log3 to create mood.

1. Setup Order Used by Both Cards

Order Control Field decision Do not use it for
1 Frame rate 23.98/24p for normal cinematic work unless the project requires another format. Fixing exposure or motion after the fact.
2 Shutter 24p = 1/48 or 180 degrees. Keep it boring unless motion effect is intentional. Bright exterior exposure control.
3 Aperture Choose for face shape, emotional feel, depth, and focus reliability. Constantly chasing brightness.
4 Base ISO 800 when controlled light is available; 12800 when light is truly limited. Making the monitor look moody.
5 ND Use ND after shutter/aperture are correct. Hiding poor setup order.
6 White balance Lock A/B/Preset under the actual key light. Creating the muted look.
7 LUT / MLUT Use LUT for monitoring; keep Internal Rec MLUT Off unless deliberately baking. Fixing bad lighting.
8 Exposure tools Waveform primary; zebras fast warning; histogram secondary. Judging by LCD brightness alone.
9 Focus Near eye for close performance; magnifier/peaking to verify. Letting AF hunt through emotional beats.
10 Audio Stop and verify with external audio guide. Assuming routing is still correct.
Field phrase: Shutter for motion. Aperture for look. ND for brightness. WB for consistency. EI for exposure-rating/monitoring. LUT for viewing.

2. Indoor Cine EI Card

Indoor work begins by eliminating accidental errors: ND On when it should be Clear, shutter changed from normal motion, white balance drifting, or exposure judged only by screen appearance.

Indoor condition Recommended Base ISO Field action
Lit actor reel 800 Use light control to keep face readable and eyes alive.
Lit feature dialogue 800 Hold continuity across coverage; control practicals and background.
Controlled interview with key light 800 Build a clean face first; keep background restrained.
Window daylight interior 800 Use window/control/negative fill before changing the whole camera strategy.
Dim documentary room 12800 may be needed Use only when light cannot reasonably be added or controlled.
Night practical-only scene 12800 may be needed Use with discipline; protect skin and avoid noisy mud.
Scene too dark but light can be added Add light; consider 800 Adding controlled light is cleaner than starving S-Log3.
Scene too dark and light cannot be added 12800 Verify waveform and playback before serious takes.
Control Indoor field setting / rule
ND Start Clear. Add ND indoors only if windows/lights overpower the scene or the desired aperture must be preserved.
Shutter 24p = 1/48 or 180 degrees. Do not change shutter to fix normal brightness.
Aperture Solo/close-up f/2.8-f/4; interview around f/4; two-person/movement f/4-f/5.6; wider/action f/5.6 if focus reliability matters.
White balance Set A/B/Preset deliberately. Avoid ATW for controlled actor/feature work. White balance for the face under actual key light.
LUT Monitor LUT On if useful. Internal Rec MLUT Off. Record clean S-Log3.
Focus Use Focus Magnifier; focus near eye; check two-person depth; recheck after zoom/reframe.
Audio Use external FX6 Audio Field Setup Guide; this card only reminds you to verify it.

3. Outdoor Cine EI Card

Outdoor daylight usually has too much light, not too little. The correct exposure tool is Variable ND, not high Base ISO and not a raised shutter.

Outdoor condition Recommended Base ISO / ND strategy Field action
Normal daylight / open shade Base ISO 800; use Variable ND Hold chosen aperture and normal shutter.
Bright sun Base ISO 800; ND is primary Protect highlights and face; choose shade when possible.
Golden hour Base ISO 800 unless light collapses Watch WB, exposure falloff, and continuity.
Night exterior with practicals 12800 may be needed Verify skin/face with waveform and playback.
Fast documentary exterior Base ISO 800; Auto ND only if necessary Use speed tools without surrendering exposure discipline.
Mixed sun/shade movement Choose dominant face light strategy Continuity may matter more than chasing every change.
Control Outdoor field setting / rule
ND Use Variable ND to hold the chosen aperture in daylight/open shade. Confirm Clear/On, Preset/Variable, and Auto ND state.
Shutter Do not raise shutter to fix brightness unless the motion effect is intentional.
Aperture Choose for face, background compression, depth, and focus reliability before using ND.
White balance Custom WB preferred for controlled work; fixed daylight/preset can be a fast documentary fallback.
Exposure tools Use waveform/zebras to balance face and highlights. LCD brightness is not exposure truth.
Focus Near eye or required action plane. Recheck after zoom/reframe; avoid AF hunting through the beat.
Audio/wind Use the external Audio Field Setup Guide for wind/noise plan and routing.

4. Shared Exposure, LUT, Focus, and Stop Tests

Checkpoint Pass condition Stop if...
Exposure truth Waveform and zebras agree that face/skin and key highlights are usable. Image is judged only by LCD brightness.
S-Log3 gray/white reference 18 percent gray is around 41 IRE; 90 percent white is around 61 IRE. The image is intentionally starved to look moody.
LUT / MLUT Recording log. Monitoring LUT. Internal Rec MLUT Off unless deliberate. The image may be double-LUTted or baked by accident.
White balance A/B/Preset locked under actual key light. ATW is drifting during controlled work.
Focus Critical eye/plane checked by magnifier/peaking or deliberate AF behavior. AF hunts or focus was not checked after move/zoom.
Media identity Card/reel/project identity logged before take. Card contents will be dumped into a flat folder later.
Audio External audio checklist complete. Meters/headphones/routing were assumed.
